i think the appeal of the movies is that they cartoon-ify it all. Nobody would go see Global Warming: The Movie, where the fallout from increasing C02 and methane levels gradually wipe out all life on earth by the 25th century. No, they wanna see Tom Cruise kick ass and take names. Just so happens that the end-of-the-world happens to be the current backdrop du jour. Which I guess that says a lot about the general mood in this country.

Why Hollywood is in love with the end of the world
by fresh prince of ohio infound this interesting - i've often (only half) joked that my viewing of the movie the terminator (which had heavy pre- and post-apocalyptic elements) at age 14 was what led to my becoming a jw later in life.. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50148079n.

Being "stranded" by contrarian theology leads to diversionary beliefs
by Terry in1. christian puritan perfectionism in america (1620 to mid 1800's) failed to create heaven on earth or a shining city on a hill.
civil war dashed that delusion.. 2. the great awakening in america took up the slack only to be followed by advent speculations that the end would be immiment.. 3. william miller inspired a movement of adventists to break with their own local churches in anticipation of jesus' arrival.. 4. the work of the adventists seems to be warning as many people as possible before 1843. the splits in local churches caused lasting enmity.
a contrarian sense of "we'll show them we're right" is hardened into the character of newly minted apostates.. 5. the great disappointment leaves perhaps 100,000 2nd adventists stranded theologically between a no-show on jesus' part and a "we told you so!

Misfit convert to the JWs here! Ouch. It was a hellish limbo indeed, those 10 years.
i didn't have it in me to double down , though I did see that in some other converts I knew. Real nutcases, they.

Welcome.
My post-JW life has been lonely, boring, and unfulfilling, but oh well, just about anything's better than the misery of JWism.

Another Newbie
by Skinnedsheep ini recently came to the realization that the organization is corrupt and is false.
my story is similar to many i think.
i was raised in the religion, pioneered and served as an elder for a number of years.

Welcome skinned sheep. I was just a 10 year JW tourist that finally left in disgust. That was 11 years ago, and it seemed to me then that the org was really starting to unravel.

Do you feel guilty?
by new hope and happiness ini have recently been having a feeling of guilt for having escaped the w.t while so many friends and family remain trapped.. has anyone else ever had similar feelings?.
-
fresh prince of ohio
I've never had guilt feelings about the ones left behind in the bOrg.
I feel that most JWs are unreachable and are happy prisoners. Which is sad, and I feel bad about that, but not guilty.

What's Your Opinion Of The News Media?
by minimus ini believe they are very powerful as a group.
if they dig in and go after someone or something, they are relentless.. conversely, if they choose to ignore something or somebody, the public may never be aware of a matter.. i support freedom of the press and i think they should be applauded for their convictions.
on the other hand, perhaps more should be expected of them..

Shame that big-city newspapers are dying a slow death. The one in my city just keeps shrinking, and shrinking, and shrinking. It's like watching a cancer patient slowly wither away.

Yes, the proclaimers book.
LOL. I found that book to be over-long and self-congratulatory to where it was like, is this for real? You really expect me to believe that this umpteen hundred page book of gushing self-praise represents the real, unbiased truth? Gahhh!!!!
